2015 T2: WHY DOES THE MOON LOOK DIFFERENT EVERY NIGHT? (Explanation)

In Week 6 of Term 2 our class focussed on how to write great explanations.
We wrote about the Moon’s different phases as we are in the middle of learning about Planet Earth and Beyond. Learning how to write a great explanation will help us with our self-guided topics in a few weeks time. Here is my writing, after I have self-assessed and peer-assessed my work.

The grey asteroid (the Moon) always changes its appearance each night. This is caused by the Lunar Phases. Some people believe that the Moon’s shape is caused by the Earth’s shadow so I will explain to you the truth of why the Moon changes its appearance each night.

The Moon’s Orbit:
The Moon’s orbit around the Earth is tilted while it orbits around the Sun. People believe that the shadow of the Earth causes the Moon by changing its own appearance, but scientists has proven that it is false. The Moon is actually caused by the amount of Sun that the Moon can reflect on.

The Lunar Phases:
There are eight lunar phases and they are called:
The New Moon,Waxing Crescent,Waxing Gibbous, First Quarter, New Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, Waning Crescent. The New Moon is a dark black shadow of the original Moon.

Lunar Months:
A Lunar Month is the amount of time it takes for the Moon to pass through its Lunar Phases. Then it turns back into its original place. It takes 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds, to complete the Moon going through the Lunar Month.

Conclusion:
I hope this explanation made you understand why the Moon always changed each night. Also if you still don’t really understand why the Moon changes each night here is a youtube link that you can watch to understand much more clearly:

  1. Bonjour Nisha,
Thank you for sharing your writing and learning about the Moon.

In terms of your writing, your next steps are:
    1) Adding enough factual detail in your writing. Remember, in an explanation text you are trying to explain why something happens and you need to give more details about the different phases (instead of just listing the phases).
    2) Reading over your work and making sure it makes sense. Proofreading is an important part of writing and will help you to become a better writer.
